Now everyone is talking about “Green building” and “sustainable development” are the hottest terms in construction right now, but what do all mean, exactly? According to the popular analyze green building is “the practice of creating healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance and demolition” Proponents say that green building is not only environmentally friendly, but also healthier and more cost-efficient. So what is sustainable development? The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) defines it as development that ensures our use of resources and the environment but doesn’t restrict their use by future generations.

There are many of green innovations beyond the home. Schools, corporates and hospitals are getting in on the green, which makes sense ecologically and economically. By improving air quality and temperature control and designing offices to increase natural light and open spaces, they get the bonus of happier, more productive workers. Corporate headquarters are also likely to go green because of the “environmental halo effect” — when consumers choose a company because it’s environmentally friendly.

For corporations, schools and hospitals, “green building” can entail anything from using waterless urinals to creating power . But homeowners who’d like to go green often don’t have the big bucks that businesses do. There’s a lot to consider, and the costs can make quite a difference in a home’s budget. Homeowners can save cash by installing new energy-efficient light bulbs, but how “green” is it and how much “green” can it save? And who says what’s green and what isn’t?

Going Green With Interior Design

Now a day’s every one is working on concepts for saving the planet and going green it’s not at all unexpected that green finds its way into interior design. A construction cannot be green on the exterior devoid of being on the inside. Energy preservation is a key phase to going green so it only looks fitting that this initial step to a green interior design is to prepare rooms with power sensitive lighting.

A Range of Husqvarna Construction Equipment

Edit Article |

Posted: Jan 14, 2011 |Comments: 0

]]>
]]>

Husqvarna started out a good handful of decades back as a dominant player in the off road motorcycle, and chainsaw market. Gradually over time though they have branched out into other areas and that now of course includes construction tools.

Now gas powered heavy power tools have been readily accepted by the public due to this company’s names highly respected reputation in the small, high horse power, gas motor market genre. However, some people have trouble connecting the Husqvarna name to electric power tools.

What these folks completely fail to realize is that Husqvarna has been manufacturing, and marketing high end, precision sewing machines for years now. So the switch over to quality electric tools like tile saws makes perfect sense. In fact Husqvarna now has three tile saws in their line-up; the TS 250 XS, the TS 250 XL3 and the TS 250 X3.

Now if you have never used a wet tile saw before then you may not realize how important quality is in one of these precision cutting tools. Cheap tile saws just aren’t going to deliver the level of performance that is required for “true” precision work. It’s the same thing with tools like compound mitre saws.

They also manufacture several types of heavy duty stone and cement cutting tools, like masonry and ring saws, as well as a huge selection of high quality diamond blades. Of course all their blades are made to Husqvarna specifications. One innovation in particular that might really catch your eye though, is their unique diamond chains for chain saws.

Sound interesting? Well just imaging being able to cut off odd ends and “trim up” cement jobs with a chain saw in the same way that a carpenter can lop off and odd ends of wood on a home frame? Well now with these new high tech saw chains you can in fact do just that.

Still one more Husqvarna innovation worth checking out even if you have no use for it, or can’t afford to buy one is their DXR 310 Demolition Robot. Now if you like space age science fiction movies with strange robot actors, you’ll love to see this one of a kind machine.

The DXR 310 walks on four legs, is operated by remote control and has something of a dinosaur neck with a hardened steel concrete demo tool stuck on the end of it. While it is a nice sized piece of heavy equipment; none the less, it’s small enough to negotiate around inside buildings.

Wire saws that cut using a diamond studded wire are an excellent tool for cutting off large pieces of concrete from foundations, or lopping off large cement objects like pillars. The problem for builders and demolition operators in the past however, has been that this level of cutting technology just wasn’t mobile.

The Husqvarna CS 2512 changes all that and brings wire cutting technology out of quarries and factories right to the job site. It hooks to the ball on a truck and is towed just like a larger compressor, or generator, and is about the same size.

One of the problems with selecting and buying construction equipment and tools today, is that there are just so many of them. The problem you see, is that in real working conditions on the job they have to be accessible and ready to use, so space in your truck is the limiting factor.

Castors in The Deep Freeze

Refrigeration is not a recent invention, evidence has been found that in prehistoric times the use of ice to preserve food was widespread. In later years many landed gentry had ice houses, dug into their grounds, on their estates, to harvest the ice throughout the year. However the first method of artificial refrigeration was pioneered in Scotland in 1756 and it would take the next 100 years for the process to be developed to produce gas refrigeration systems on an industrial scale.

The Future of Green Buildings, Sustainable Architecture, and Leed 2009

LEED 2009 is set to begin beta testing in February of 2009, with the full transition and launch of all new tests to happen by summer.
One of the biggest changes to the LEED Rating system is the incorporation of regionalism, where there is a possibility of a project team earning extra points that are prioritized in a project’s environmental zone. Also, some of the existing credits will be rewritten and fine-tuned based on user experience and comments about the old rating systems.

Besides the change in the point rating system, there is another change that is affecting those who are on the front line of the green building movement through LEED, the LEED Accredited Professionals.

There are over 65,000 people who are LEED APs around the entire world, many of which who have helped bring LEED and the USGBC to where it is today in the world of sustainable architecture and green building design.

There is no longer just a LEED AP, as those who will be implementing the LEED rating systems for LEED 2009 will be a part of a three tiered credential system. The first tier is called “LEED Green Associate”, the second “The LEED Accredited Professional”, and the third “The LEED AP Fellow.”

The first tier, the LEED Green Associates, will be for “the people who support the LEED rating system,” as said by Beth Holst, VP of credentials for the Green Building Certification Institute. The exam for the LEED Green Associate will cover basic green building knowledge and will not require the in-depth knowledge that it takes to bring a project to LEED certification. The types of people who are fitted for this exam are the product manufacturers, the marketers, the finance people, customer service, and students. It is unknown how many of these people are already LEED APs, but this exam will be much more suited for their needs, as they will probably never get into the actual details of LEED certification, which is reserved for the next tier, the LEED Accredited Professional.

The second tier, the LEED Accredited Professional, will be specialized credentials that get’s into the “in-depth knowledge of the rating system for the area that you work in most.” These specialized rating systems will include specializations in New Construction, Interiors, Homes, Operations and Maintenance (previously LEED for Existing Buildings), and Neighborhood Development. The exam and rating systems will be similar to the existing version, with the changes in regionalism and the addition of new Water Efficiency credits, which was commented to be a minor lacking in the current version of the LEED rating system. There will be other changes, all of which will be announced when the new LEED reference guides come out mid to early 2009.

The third and final tier is reserved for the LEED AP Fellow. The LEED AP Fellow is a person who demonstrates great knowledge in the LEED rating system, distinguished with years of experience and leading green building design. This is an elite class of leading professionals that will be of much fewer numbers than the previous tiers of the new LEED credentialing system.

Beta testing for the LEED Green Associate’s exam begins in February of 2009, and the entire rating system is planned for launch in mid 2009. This is a great step towards refining the somewhat controversial rating system, which should make it more accepted and specialized for buildings living in certain regions of the world.

Many people are anxiously awaiting the new rating system, and will be curious to see how widely accepted it will truly be. It’s a step in the right direction, and we should all thank the USGBC in their efforts to stay current in today’s constantly changing green building market and it’s technologies.

Saving Money in Construction Business by Equipments Leasing or Renting

Many contractors do not have the big pockets to buy the suitable equipment and tools required for their job. Other companies may not want to make an expensive purchase before investigating the value and effectiveness of the equipment. Renting or leasing heavy equipment is a means of gaining the use of the necessary equipment with less upfront funds. The choice that is best for the contractor can be determined by the required use of the equipment. Long term leasing is better for equipment needed over an extended period of time or equipment used repetitively whereas rental equipment is better for short-term requirements. Consider the following factors before making a decision on buying, renting, or leasing construction equipment.

One advantage to renting heavy equipment is the opportunity to judge a piece of equipment with little or no additional expense. This is a great way to try before investing in a very expensive heavy equipment machinery. The rental equipment can then be purchased if the equipment is deemed necessary and is economically feasible. If the equipment is not worth the investment or does not increases the overall productivity, the contractor or company can walk away and simply return it to the construction tool rental company and try a different machine or a different brand of the same tool.

Another consideration is the profitability of the company or contractor. If the business is struggling financially, rentals may be more appropriate than a purchase or a longer-term lease. New corporations may wish to choose rented equipment in order to decrease start-up expenditures and that way they can also avail the tax benefits. They can keep renting till they can afford to buy their own or have enough saving to purchase.

Online sales, rentals, and leases are becoming more popular. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), an international heavy equipment resource, conducted a study to predict future trends. The evidence supports the conclusion that the purchases of construction equipment from Internet sources will continue to increase. This trend clearly explains the preference given by home builders and contractors.

On-line sources such as auctions, sales, and rental or leasing services, are multiplying day by day. Suppliers specializing in a particular kind of equipment as well as dealers offering a variety of equipment types are becoming more available via the Internet. Almost any kind of construction equipment can now be procured at places such as Machine Mart, Iron Planet, or Contractors Hotline. Brands such as John Deere and Caterpillar are available in addition to the many lesser-known companies. Various companies offer the option of renting or leasing to buy.

Whether on-line, via a catalogue, or at a local company, investigate the manufacturer and vender before signing the rental, leasing, or purchasing agreement. Compare price and quality as well as reputation. Read any reviews available online or any customer testimonials on the web. Thoroughly read any contract before adding a signature. What are the terms concerning returning equipment? Read any fine print. This can reduce an expensive transaction later on. To get the best value of your money sign up on the rental company’s newsletter, will give updated information and you are more likely to get a deal whenever the company offers one.
