Green Homes
——————-

I would like to purchase land outside of Minneapolis and build a green home. Any suggestions? What about grants?

buy the land first and then go on with what you already planned,,
Find some land in an area you like. The north and east of the city is good. ( I prefer St Paul). Once you have the land find a material that can support a roof, and snow weight. Also find a material that is thick enough to hold heat well for our winters. Then add any solar panels/wind turbines you want to. Think about round mud or muck based walls. They work really well, and are a cheap natural material. Wind turbines work in Hugo and some other suburbs. Find out from your city hall what is and is not allowed for building codes, and Power scources.
THe most important thing is to buy green paint.
Talk to your local regulatory agencies about laws on green buildings; most likely there is some kind of tax credits for building a “green home” once it is certified to be so. Then talk to local contractors who are experienced in buidling green homes.
Also check out this site on green buildings for more info:

Good luck!
Use energy star products, solar power for things like your garage door. Use those curly energy conserving light bulbs. Recycle rain water.
