  1. LORI says:

They may have looked OK from the outside but they were incredibly rundown and dangerous.

The CHA/city did not fix those places for decades. So lots of people had like no working tub or sewage came up from their sinks/tubs/toilets all the time. Windows/doors were broken and never fixed, elevators never worked, basically they were totally run down and neglected.

But the main problem was those were like the most dangerous housing projects in the country hands down. Projects are really isolated compared to real neighborhoods and crime gets concentrated in a very small area. The gangs and drug dealers basically took over those projects and made them too dangerous to live in. But the police couldn’t/didn’t really deal with it, so people couldn’t go outside to play or even walk to the bus stop safely and tons of people got murdered/shot/etc. The gangs would do stuff like kick people out of their apartment so they could use it to sell drugs. But the people there were too poor to get a new place obviously, and the police weren’t doing their jobs so it was really bad situation for the ‘normal’ people living there.

Anyway, they might have looked OK from the outside but they were really messed up and dangerous and tearing them down was the only way to fix the problems at all.

The city’s answer to housing shortage in the 1960s turned into crime infested cages run by gangs. Elevators and utilites were in constant disrepair due to vandals making travel to upper stories a dark and dangerous walk. Snipers zeroed in on parking lots, playgrounds and anywhere else within range.

  5. Tommy says:

Remember when Mayor Jane Byrne said that Cabrini Green was OK and to prove it she moved into one of the apartments. Two days later she moved and declared them a “Chicago menace.”

  6. C_Starz2 says:

If you ever see the episode of gangland..on the history channel. Theres one that they did in Cabrini Green, and they show video of the insides of the buildings….I was mortified on how horrible it was! Try to look for that episode, ive seen it replayed a dozen times.

  7. reporter says:

they tore them down to get rid of the vermin who lived there. the CHA spent millions trying to repair them, the vermin kept destroying them.
